Yet when volunteers and shelter workers find themselves dealing with animals who have been purposely abused, there really is a great effort of heart and mind to keep working and to continue your objective to save innocent lives. And such is the situation with this abandoned Pit Bull dog, evidently the victim of abuse for a long time and left to die in the midst of dirt, waste and with a tight rope around her neck.
The dog was inside a property, and the volunteers had no idea what they would find, after stories of having to retrieve and take away a dog. They had no idea of the horrible spectacle they would find themselves in front of.
The noose placed around her neck was so tight that she couldn’t breathe properly. She was skin and bones, extremely undernourished and in an almost desperate situation. Since he was lifeless, the rescuers did not immediately comprehend if they had arrived too late or if it was still possible to intervene in extremis. Getting close, everyone observed that the poor dog was breathing. Regrettably, it was not clear how long she still would live.
They cut the rope around her neck and dragged her to the van. It was vital to get her evaluated immediately by a vet. For the veterinary surgeon, amazed after inspecting her, it was a miracle how she had lasted for so long. Rescuers gave her a name at that point: Esmeralda .
Esmeralda instantly received medications and intravenous fluids while the veterinary personnel carried out all the essential inspections. Testing proved that she was actually in severe shape and close to collapsing. She is underweight, dehydrated, anemic and in need of an emergency transfusion.
Everything has been attempted with medical care. We went on to feed it, heal it, help return values to a level of livability. It was a miracle she was still alive. The rescuers surrounding were grieving for the circumstance Esmeralda was in. She glanced at them languidly, as if to say: “Even if I can’t make it, thanks anyhow for the aid and the embraces”. Exactly what occurred.
Everyone around her made Esmeralda as comfortable as possible. Veterinarians and volunteers continued with the treatment trying to alleviate the agony of the dog, every day, with the utmost effort.
Although her body continued to sink beneath the weight of months, years of abuse and persecution, her spirit improved day by day. Whenever a volunteer or a doctor turned to Esmeralda, the dog displayed excitement and happiness, as much as she could. She was pleased to finally be cared for and loved. Yet the story will not have a pleasant ending.
This is how she spent her last days of life, surrounded by the team that cared for and loved her until the last. Adorable Esmeralda received all the help she could, they never gave up on her but so much love and continuous care were not enough.
