A vendor at a Chinese market known for its dog meat trade saw the golden retriever bitch for sale and believed it to be a stolen pet.
Local animal lovers raised enough money to pay dog meat sellers.
According to an animal friend surnamed Xu, there were hundreds of people in the group at that time.
They raised 14,450 yuan (£1,612) from sellers to buy the golden retriever and about 20 other dogs.
On April 1, an incident occurred in the Xiaobanqiao Market in Kunming.
All of the dogs were believed to be stolen pets when the group found them and were kept in rusty cages.
The animal lovers are Sanhe Animal Protection Centre volunteers in Kunming.
Before seeing the caged dogs, they went to the market to find missing pets. One of them seemed to be the dog they were looking for. The sellers allegedly told them the dogs were “food dogs”, meaning they were sold to restaurants to cook dishes. Sellers are asking 60 yuan (£6.60) per kilo.
The group decided to buy all the dogs from the seller, and everyone started donating.
After paying the seller, the gang took the dog to Kunming Dongfang Animal Hospital for a medical examination.

While many believed the dog was shedding tears of gratitude, hospital director Wang Zaigao said the dog had just undergone an optical examination, which could explain the tears.
Animal lovers and veterinarians have been searching for new homes for rescued dogs. According to volunteer Ms. Xu, 17 of them found adoptive families.
Mr Wang stated that the hospital was caring for one remaining dog that was in good health.
