The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital where Keli’s being treated joyfully said, “It’s time for him to come into the ‘dehumanizing trees’ in preparation for release back to the wild.

During the early evening of June 2, Ralph Dorn searched the lake’s surface behind his house for his Goldendoodle, Harley. Then he spotted the pup about 200 feet from shore; the 6-year-old canine was swimming with another animal, which Dorn discovered was a tiny baby deer after a few seconds.

“Not sure how the fawn got out there, but Harley obviously didn’t ask why, he just jumped into action,” Dorn, 62, of Culpeper, Virginia, wrote in a popular Facebook post about the event that has been shared more than 250,000 times.

Harley paddled beside the fawn all the way to shore. Dorn encountered the animals on land and assisted the fawn in climbing a difficult cliff. Harley began gently licking the fawn’s body after removing the baby deer from the pond and placing her on the grass.

“Harley really didn’t want to leave the fawn,” Dorn tells PEOPLE. “He just kept interacting with it, licking it and caring for it.”

Soon after the fawn reached the sea, the fawn’s mother came on the lawn. Dorn pulled Harley inside their adjacent home after he spotted the mother deer. The doe moved away with her baby after Dorn and Harley had left.

But something was wrong the next morning as Dorn and his wife, Patricia, 64, were having coffee.

“Harley became agitated as he ran from window to window. “When I opened the front door, we could hear the fawn bleating,” Dorn wrote on Facebook.

“Harley ran into the tree line and found the fawn,” he wrote. “The little one stopped bleating, tail wagging, they touched noses, sniffed each other, and Harley came back to the house calmly with me.”

Dorn tells PEOPLE that after the brief reunion with Harley, the fawn settled down, and by the end of the day, the baby and its mother were gone. Dorn hasn’t seen the pair since he estimated the fawn was a few days old.

A dog named Pancake has been a vital member of an elephant sanctuary in Thailand ever since she was spotted as a stray three years ago.

“She was a stray on the beach who was picked on by other dogs,” Katherine Connor, founder and CEO of Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES), told The Dodo.

When a fan of the sanctuary saw Pancake, she asked Connor if she would take the dog. “Of course I said yes!” Connor stated. “Pancake has been my shadow ever then.”

The staff and animals at BLES are no stranger to the arrivals and departures that occur there, especially because the sanctuary concentrates on taking in senior elephants after they can no longer work.

For instance, a few of years ago, when an elderly elephant named Sao Noi was passing away, her buddy, an elephant named Boon Thong, was observed standing next to her, caressing her with her trunk to soothe her.

Suddenly, over two years later, Boon Thong’s own hour of need arrived. And happily she had individuals who were there by her side, the way she had been for her buddy.

When Pancake discovered Boon Thong wasn’t feeling well, she raced to be with her.

While she is far from being an elephant, Pancake has also relished the quiet and calm of the sanctuary, and this creates a feeling of connection among the creatures saved by BLES.

And so Pancake and Connor both stayed with Boon Thong for hours this week, while they did the most hardest labor of all – recalling her life and eventually saying goodbye.

Boon Thong, who was in her 60s, spend the final five years of her life at the sanctuary after being liberated from a riding camp, where she was forced to offer rides to visitors.

“She was used to carry visitors on her back for hours on end and after doing this for almost 30 years, she nearly shattered her back,” Connor added.

By the time Boon Thong arrived to the sanctuary five years ago, she was fatigued.

But soon Boon Thong understood just how different the sanctuary was from the life she had known.

In the sanctuary she was finally allowed to be free, to understand her likes and dislikes, to roam and forage in the forest – all things she hadn’t been able to do for much of her life.

“She was free to be in control of her own life, to make her own decisions, to express herself,” Connor wrote in a tribute last week. “Boon Thong was a creature of habit. She had her favorite sites in our release zones that she would always gravitate to during our regular walks. She constantly scratched on the same tree and she always stopped at the same point in the stream to fling mud all over herself.”

Boon Thong wouldn’t have given up her life at the sanctuary for anything — and when she laid down last week, it was only because she finally had to let her life go.

Connor and Pancake waited with Boon Thong for nine hours until she slowly died away.

“Pancake, with that amazing heart of hers, did not leave Katherine or Boon Thong once,” BLES posted on Facebook. “She understood she was required, to provide comfort and she silently laid next Boon Thong, till sunset – until the dying breath.”

Boon Thong’s remains was buried on the sanctuary grounds, surrounded by fruit and flowers, and near her old pals — including Sao Noi — so she can always be close to the individuals who loved her.

Quite the heroic deed, get to know the guy who has helped thousands of animals with mobility issues get back on their feet.

Meet this Virginia animal prosthetics specialist who provides animals with restricted mobility a second chance at life by developing unique mechanical limbs—giving them the chance to walk again.

Through his charity, Bionic Pets, Derrick Campana, 43, has improved the lives of approximately 35,000 animals, including dogs, goats, cows, camels, raccoons and elephants.

“All animals deserve to walk and enjoy a beautiful life, just like people,” Campana, who appears in the television series “The Wizard of Paws,” told The Epoch Times. “All these technology, all these things that we have, animals should have.”

Campana’s aim to aid animals in distress began roughly 18 years ago. One day, the owner of a black Labrador retriever arrived into her workplace, where she builds prosthetics for people, and told her that she wanted a prosthesis for her dog, Charles. At that time, Campana did not know or had seen an animal with a prosthesis, for which she was amused.

Rather than ditch the concept totally, though, Campana took a week and built it from scratch.

“It took me a long time to construct my first device since it was so strange to me, I didn’t know what I was doing,” he added. “While I had all the skills to create human prosthetics, it was extremely different.”

“In a manner I had to develop the whole process and figure out what would work good for an animal,” he continued.

While it was something he had never done before, fitting Charles with a prosthesis brought Campana enormous satisfaction since it functioned wonderfully for him.

After the success of the initial device he made, Campana proceeded to study more to see if anybody else in the world was doing this and discovered that no one else was producing prosthetics for animals at the time. Consequently he instantly began a firm, which developed to become an international concern.

“Everything I learned on the human side, I wanted to offer to the veterinary side, and it was simply this fully open market,” he added. “I am also an entrepreneur at heart, and I adore making things with my hands.”

Believing he had a “talent for this,” Campana worked more with Charles’s owner, a veterinarian who comes across numerous damaged dogs and brings him these diverse cases.

Owing to this, Campana was able to steadily strengthen his talents. But, it was not wholly straightforward, and in some cases it was so tough for him that he had to manufacture the device or prosthesis again and over again.

For example, Campana recounts that there was once a dog named Evany that had a rather high front limb amputation. With no prior experience creating such a prosthesis, he attempted it 8-10 times.

“When I finally got it to work, to get it upright, and the dog to walk, I was really thrilled because I found out that there are many more dogs in the world who require precisely the same sort of treatment,” he added. “I recognized that I had just extended my patient base.”

Having found out the recipe over all these years, Campana’s operation is currently functioning as smoothly as possible. Everything is made on site in Sterling, Virginia. Owners that live closer to home bring their animals to be shaped, or if they are further away, the firm gives them a molding kit. A mold is then formed with the aid of instructional films or with the expertise of a veterinarian.

Campana, who loves to use his hands, sculpts all the molds himself. Animals are fitted with the prosthesis at the shop or sent to the opposite side.

According to Campana, there is a misperception that prosthetics are for the privileged. He underlines that it is precisely the reverse.

“It can truly substitute surgery and make animals recuperate in another way without going under the knife or under the knife,” he says. “For example, a dog ruptures its anterior cruciate ligament and has to have knee surgery for $5,000. But, that is not always necessary: we may place a knee pad on the dog. And after a few months the knee brace may be removed and they mend without the need for surgery.”

He points out that the process is also lot easier and people can save more money in the long run.

“The most important thing I want people to grasp is that compared to surgery, the cost of our prosthetics and orthotics is far lower, and they are just as effective, if not even better,” Campana said.

Thus far, the largest animal that Campana has helped by fitting a prosthetic limb is a male elephant. By now, she has helped several elephants, since she has lately returned from Thailand after aiding these animals.

But, Campana clarifies a very crucial topic. He said that most people expect that it will be a miracle every time. But, it is not.

“Like people, animals require time to acclimate to braces and prosthetics,” Campana remarked. “Whenever they finally grasp it and get acclimated to it, that’s the miracle.”

Once everything works properly, observing the emotions of the animal, the carer and the family is wonderful, Campana added.

“I adore it,” he said. “[It’s] absolutely the nicest thing to behold.”

“The Wizard of Paws,” meantime, has become a wonderful initiative as people across the world get the chance to watch Campana, accompanied by his dog, Henry, travel around the nation in a “ mobile limb lab, helping animals in need. This has also been a lot of fun for Campana’s eldest son.

“He is 9 years old and he loves coming with me to the different sanctuaries,” adds Campana. “My youngest kid is still 3 years old, so he doesn’t comprehend anything, but he loves to watch my program. He’s usually watching TV and commenting, ‘Well, Daddy saves the animals. He is making legs for the animals.’”

And what’s next for this busy businessman? He is now working on developing a non-profit company called the Bionic Barn: a facility that will allow pet owners to travel with their animals, large or little, and remain on site while their prosthetics are being built.

“People will be able to observe what we do and experience the full process,” discloses Campana. “We’re also going to have some robot animals.”

He also wants to form an accrediting agency to standardize the business, as there aren’t many standards at the present, he stated.

“This is extremely, very important,” adds Campana. “A lot of people simply want to do this, but there’s no standard and then you end up hurting the animals, and I don’t want that to happen.”

For Campana, helping animals in need has become her heart’s vocation.

“It’s such an intoxicating sensation… to watch these animals walk again,” he remarked. “You’re not only helping the animal, you’re helping the whole family.”

The father of two adds that sometimes it is the first time he has helped a given species, but he knows that by providing care to one animal, he will end up helping others.

The emotion of helping is so ineffable that he wants to do it again and over again.

“That’s why I keep doing it, and that’s why I’ll keep doing it for the rest of my life,” Campana added.

We feel it is reasonable to presume that most of us have heard about the Australian fires, which happened from September 2019 to March 2020 and badly harmed the country’s animals and flora. The fires were particularly catastrophic in New South Wales.

The drought and the fires that happened last year are the most severe signs of Australia’s climate disaster. Disasters such as fires and floods have wrecked farmers’ livelihoods and caused millions of dollars in damage.

Regrettably, due to these tremendous fires, a lot of animals in Australia were also either heavily harmed or dead. Around 60,000 wild koalas were killed during this disaster, making them the most vulnerable. Yet, many of them were saved because to the efforts of volunteers, firefighters, and one dog in particular.

We’d like to introduce you to Bear, a dog who saved over 100 koalas during Australia’s Blacksummer bushfires.

Meet Bear, a dog who saved over 100 koalas during the Australian bushfires

Ourpets contacted Bear’s owner and asked a few questions. Then, we enquired as to whether Bear had been specifically trained to locate Koalas. \s“ Trained specifically for koalas. A collaboration with detecting dogs for conservation at USC and IFAW—achieved with a lot of patience and perseverance.

Dogs are fantastic allies for conservation. Their noses are invaluable and effective in helping find and collect data on species in need. It drastically lowers effort and time! And it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved—rescues are valuable, and as Bear illustrated, where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Then, we wanted to know how the concept for Bear’s Instagram account came to be.

“Everyone is online now! We already had Instagram accounts for the detection dog team, but after the bushfires, everyone wanted to know more about Bear. Therefore we utilize Facebook to share information about our work with IFAW, wildlife rescue organizations, research, and daily living.”

Bear being the amazing dog that he is we also wanted to know what his personality was like!

“Goofy and cheeky! Bear truly is a bit of a dog with poor self-confidence, but on the field he just loves life and you can feel it in his big silly smile! He’s so enthusiastic that all he wants to do all day is play! His whole focus is on collecting his toy and engaging in play. He’ll run, execute a quick drop, make a small ‘awooo’ sound, and tell you what he wants with his eyes—a toy! He needs to get some exercise or he’ll be hyper charged all day like a Duracell bunny, and he’ll let you know! He loves a pat and massage in the early morning and evening, especially on the chest.

Additionally, curiously, he LOVES the smell of pizza! It’s the one food he will watch you eat.”

Bear assisted to find koalas in need of medical assistance during the 2019-2020 bushfires. Bear’s astonishing story went viral, so we wanted to find out how the dog’s owner made about it.

“Insane! That was intimidating as this was totally new to us… Yet, everyone loves a dog with a good story! And if we can share some joy in the middle of the tragedy created by the bushfires, it would be worthwhile.”

Bear appears like a lively dog, and it made us ask whether his owner had any hilarious anecdotes to share with us.

“While we were being interviewed, someone threw the ball behind us, and Bear with his steel focus tried to run right through one of the persons being interviewed, completely KO’d the person—knocking them off their stool and into the ground! Bear carried on as if nothing had happened. He’ll make a game out of it if you can throw it and he can catch it… Bear kept bringing leaves to someone to throw, and with each throw, the leaf shrank until there was only a sliver of stem left. He placed this little little stem attached to his tongue in someone’s lap, only to be unable to provide it and instead leave a massive wet mark on the person’s clothes. This continued on for 30 minutes, and if there wasn’t another leaf left, he’d go find one.”

Lastly, we couldn’t resist but ask what was Bear’s owner’s favorite part about him.

“His character! Sometimes he reminds me of Sid from Ice Age, things don’t always look switched on… But then he switches his concentration, and you can see all the cogs working behind those eyes! One of his managers refers to him as Dobby White Walker, a reference to Harry Potter’s elf and Game of Thrones’ white walkers’ eyes!”

He is the only dog in Australia that is trained and capable of finding Koalas as he sniffs out their fur and faeces

Bear’s great work was awarded when the dog got the Special Recognition Award from the International Foundation for Animal Welfare in the UK

The amazing actions of the six-year-old Australian koolie earned him a gold medal.

Bear also gets to wear these cute shoes to protect his paws while investigating the areas devastated by the fires.

Owing to his hard work, a lot of koalas were saved, and extra pets and play time were supplied as an added award for the good boy
